May 7: The limits to legitimate authority

The theme today is proper authority. In any society, some things may be legal, but that does not mean they are morally right. Example: abortion is legal. But it is legalized murder.

Today, we'll look at two cases: Sharyl Attkisson has tried to get justice through the US legal system for more than 7 years without success. She can prove the government illegally spied on her.

In California, a couple days ago, many people 'illegally' protested against the Governor's authority to keep them locked down and out of work. The police, in full riot gear, roughed up a pastor and were ready to attack the protesters.

First, Sharyl:

1.What do you think happened to the optical cable that was found on Sharyl's roof and stored in her garage? What was fishy about the incident?

2.Sharyl has been fighting the US government in court for 8 years to admit that she was illegally spied on. She even has a former FBI agent who was spying on her testify in court. Yet, the Department of Justice keeps fighting her. How serious is this? How serious is the fact that no major media are supporting Sharyl?

Now, Californians:

1. How do you think the Doctor with the bullhorn handled the situation?

2. Do you agree that individual police have to decide if an order is both lawful and moral? Should they be prepared to refuse orders and risk their jobs?

3.Would you confront the police in the way the Americans in California did?
