Welcome home, Emma 🙋
I wish we were face to face again, not virtually, but we'll work together using this blog, Zoom, and the Teams app in Office 365. And, I'm going to try using the Notebook app to present and organize class materials. You will probably be quicker than I in adapting to the new reality. Be patient, I'll catch up eventually.
So we will focus on critically reviewing the media, both in "BIAS" and thinking about the issue which faces us all, which President Trump calls "The Chinese Virus."
Watch the first clip and respond before watching and responding to the second:
Clip 1: Reporter suggests Pres. Trump is racist:

Do you agree that referring to the "Chinese Virus" is racist? Why or why not?
Clip 2: Today, the media say it's racist but what were they saying on March 12th?

What do you think about the big switch in attitude? Why do you think they are doing this now? What does the fact that the entire msm--mainstream news media--switched to a different 'narrative' imply about their reliability?

Response to President Trumps “China Virus” Comment:
I do not think this is a racist comment, at least not in the way that he implied. Trump was simply meaning that this virus that has caused a pandemic, was originated in China, therefore, it is a Chinese virus. He is standing up for his American soldiers when they tried to imply that they had spread the virus to the United States, but Trump stood his ground and defended his country and soldiers and told the press the truth. We can look back the Spanish flu also, although this example is slightly different because it did not originate in Spain. Back then, if people were as offensive as they are now, we would not still be calling it the Spanish flu.
Response to the “Wuhan Virus” and “China Virus” comments:
If I am understanding your questions correctly, the change in attitude between trump saying China Virus and the media calling it the China virus has had a drastic jump. Part of me wants to think that if the news is in control and is saying “China virus” it is a non-racist true comment, but if Trump says it, the media can jump on it and turn the comment on its side and somehow get Trump “ in trouble” for saying such a thing. Another thought would be that media could be reacting on Trumps comment to spark a reaction in the public, because he has Chinese Americans living in his country and he could be being rude to them. This is not a politically correct statement for President Trump to have said, but I respect his honesty and bravery to not care to tell the truth. We can obviously conclude that the reliability of the media is based on the reaction of the public.
1. Funny enough actually, I had seen this video previously online too. Personally, I don't necessarily think referring to the virus as the Chinese virus is racist, especially because China is now sort of boasting about how they got it under control. People need to know that it came from China. They have some rather gross cultural habits in China that I'm fine with because it's how they are but also I think them eating bats or some weird animal is what caused the virus. All President Trump is doing is making sure that America doesn't get blamed for something that's not their fault. At the same time, I think there is a nicer way of associating it with China other than calling it the "Chinese Virus". To sum it up, it's not racist.
2. It's pretty much a joke to me to be honest. The fact that they literally called it the China Virus and then days later call out Trump on it is embarrassing on them. It just goes to show that they will say, twist, manipulate anything to make Trump or any republican look bad. It goes to show us that the media only shows us what they want us to see. People who can't put two and two together would have never realized that Trump wasn't the only one calling it the "Chinese Corona Virus Outbreak".
I do not think that calling COVID-19 the Chinese virus is racist. This is for the same reason that you would call someone from France, French. If they/it came from there, you should call it such. I do think that it is not racist but I can see how people would think it racist as if all who are Chinese are responsible for the virus. I think that if some one is made aware that the people around them think this way they should call the virus just simply the virus or even COVID-19. However if the Chinese virus has no effect on those around you, call it what you wish. The Chinese virus is not racist. In fact, saying that it is implies that you think of it as all Chinese people are responsible at least to some degree, in order for the suggestion of the Chinese virus being racist to cross your mind.
I think that they are only changing to appeal to certain crowds. Saying the Wuhan Coronavirus is fine until Trump says it; then it is only acceptable to say the COVID-19. It is really annoying that they say this. This implies that their reliability has dropped off the deep-end. They will do whatever they can to promote their own messages. And if the view of the public changes dramatically, their view will too, just to get publicity. I've become quite annoyed with it.
